MacNotables #829: Ted Landau Reviews the Latest on Jailbreaking the iPhone 2.0

0

Ted Landau

When Mac troubleshooting legend Ted Landau got his new new iPhone 3G, one of the first things he did was to jailbreak it. Should you? Ted talks about the two reasons you might consider jailbreaking your iPhone, whether it is a new 3G or an original Edge model, and the two categories of software that still require a jailbroken phone. What you lose (or don’t) by jailbreaking, what Ted misses from the original first round of unsanctioned iPhone apps (that no longer work with the 2.0 software), and why the incentive just isn’t there to create those programs are all part of Ted’s analysis, along with why some highly coveted features are best left to Apple to implement.

MacVoices #8105: Ben and Jon Gotow Discuss NetSketch, the Only Vector-Based Drawing Program for the iPhone

In the first-ever MacVoices father and son interview, Ben Gotow, the developer of NetSketch, and his dad, Jon Gotow of St. Clair Software, introduce the only vector-based drawing program for the iPhone and iPod touch. Ben discusses the rich set of capabilities of NetSketch, including the ability to zoom in and out with no loss of quality, a canvas that goes far beyond the device screen, and the extensive collaboration features that turn the program into something much more than just a place to draw. Your creations aren’t trapped on the device; by using their web service, NetSketch images can be exported as either EPS or JPEG files to be further edited on the desktop. Ben and Jon also discuss Ben’s experiences as a first-time developer on a first-time platform, the challenges they faced in beta-testing the program, and more.

0

The MacJury reviews Apple’s quarterly announcements and why the stock took an after-hours dive in spite of yet another stellar quarter, before focusing on Apple’s iPhone priorities. Much has been made of Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing for iPod Greg Joswiak’s statements about why cut-and-paste isn’t included (yet) on the iPhone. The panel assumes a variety of perspectives to discuss some of the features they feel should move to the top tier of the priority list. “Frozen state” applications, improved syncing to stability, Flash support, modifications to the iPhone App Store…all these and more are discussed before the MacJury renders judgement on the one feature that is absolutely necessary for the iPhone’s success.

The panel includes:

Ben also provides some thoughts on the state of the iPhone App Store from the developer perspective, the impact of the commenting system, and some of the additions needed to better serve customers and developers alike.
