Oh man, I wish I had heard this podcast somewhat earlier. Though it’s late, I’ve bought the ebook, just in case I ever have to go through this again.

In November I changed my web hosting service after two years at a webhost with zero support! Fine, I suppose, for experts but not for newbies at web-related stuff like me. The new host (with excellent support services) smoothly transferred all the stuff from the website at the old hosting service to themselves…but then needed me to change the DNS addresses of my domain name to point to the new addresses. And therewith began a Kafkian trip. Thought my domain name was registered with Joker but found out not true anymore. I tried to contact the so-called email support without receiving any response. Finally found a phone number and called that. Was told that yes, since middle of 2004 they had transferred Registrar to their affiliated one, BookMyName. Went to their website but it said I had no domain name registered with them. Whois said otherwise. Back and forth in ever more surreal emails where they were obviously making fun of me. Another phone call. Finally got an email giving me login and password info to manage my domain name where I succeeded in transferring DNS addresses. Then decided to transfer Registrars too to my new host while I was at it and that worked.

Then I noticed I had also registered a .eu domain name and the game started all over again. Nightmare! After some more back and forth I got wise and posted a complaint at the ICANN site. After two days I received login and password for the .eu domain name. Hope to get outta there soonest.

The Take Control of Domain Names ebook shall be my evening’s reading.
