Having recently watched the MacVoicesTV interview with Dan, I thought I might give Sandvox a try.

I'm glad I did! What a great product.

It really is the only website-creation tool I've used where I ended the day with the same amount of hair as with I started! When you're follicly challenged, that's important!

I'm looking forward to the updates.

Great job.

A double-edged sword is the best way to describe Facebook’s privacy settings. I don’t understand why most social-networking sites even have privacy statements and setting, because in reality you really don’t have control over your privacy. Furthermore, you give up any other rights once you join those sites, giving them license to use any content you post however they see fit. A new privacy- and security-based social-networking site, called zeldaB.com allows user to maintain all your rights to privacy, without giving up anything. At zeldaB, there are no hidden terms and conditions, and the policy is simple and easy to understand.
Check it out at www.zeldab.com.

Good 'cast, with lots of info on various options & considerations re navigation tools for iPhone, and a little on the iPad.

One omission (suggestion): Please add some suggestions for the situation when one has a spouse as navigator. My spouse and I just returned from a three week vacation in the beautiful state of KY. We took turns driving, with the other one using the iPad & Google maps, to navigate. Google gave incorrect info at least three times.

It would be great to hear Glenn's thoughts on this. Would one of these apps have been better, or are there still other choices?

Wasn't intended to scare, but more to inform and let people know there are real reasons to pay attention. That said, the aspect of a community page being created without the individual's consent does cross over into distressing territory.

Thanks for listening!

There's one potential application for the iPad that's not now being mention. Quite a few business travels have documents they need to read, review and approve. An application that made that task smooth and easy should be a big hit. It'd track incoming documents, sorted by priority and type, and take care of sending the reviewed document back. It'd also be a way to process must-read articles.

Having used an iPod touch for some six months, I think that the touch keypad remains a big issue. It's good that the one on the iPad will be bigger, but that's balanced by the fact that the iPad isn't as easy to hold standing or in many awkward seating arrangements (i.e. airline seats).

Apple seems to have realize that by (finally) offering integration with Bluetooth keyboards. But any full-sized keyboard will be about 1/3 the size and weight of an iPad, negating the portability advantage. What the iPad needs and what the iPhone/touch could benefit from as well would be an iPhone-sized, Bluetooth thumb keypad. There'd be no learning curve. Many millions of people can already use one quickly and efficiently. And it'd let users place the iPad with its screen where it can best be seen and use the keypad in whatever way is most comfortable for them. It'd be especially great for taking notes in class and at meetings, since it'd be faster and users wouldn't have to look down as they type.

I have used DevonThink Pro for a number of years. Unfortunately, this interview does not reveal the depth or breadth of DevonThink. It is not just a tinkerer's scrapbook. This interview--presumably the author's book as well--merely skims the surface of this application.

DevonThink is an information manager with great depth. When you get information that you want to save for later reference--whether that is an email, a web page, a pdf file, or a writing that you create yourself--all of this can be stored and indexed for easy search and recall in DevonThink.

The application is also quite easy to use initially. You can store and index things easily--because the structure of the application tracks the ease and familiarity of the Finder.

By now, most of us have thousands of documents and writings on the hard drives of our computers. DevonThink can index these files--even your entire hard drive--and incorporate the index of those files within the DevonThink Database so that you can search and find, within DevonThink, all the files on your entire hard drive. BTW, you can do that in a much more refined way than you can with Spotlight.

After using DevonThink for a number of years, I have the appreciation that I am using only a small portion of the capability of the application, and I want to use more of its complexity. I was hoping that Joe Kissell's book might help me plumb the depths of the application. After listening to this interview, however, I doubt that the book will be helpful to me, and I will look elsewhere.

As a long-time customer and fan of Rogue Amoeba's apps for the Mac, I understand Paul's frustrations. Apple's app review process is flawed and there don't seem to be any clear and sensible guidelines. One finds totally stupid and badly written apps there as well as quality stuff by serious Mac developers like Paul. I like the idea of alternate sources, with a disclaimer by Apple to cover it from spurious lawsuits, or a real review of apps with better guidelines - the recent scandal of an app that harvested a user's information when the app was run is a good example. Either Apple gets its stuff together and does a serious overhaul of it's approval criteria (and possibly trains it's reviewers more thoroughly) or it is going to keep on losing the best app developers.

Thanks guys, I really enjoyed the reminiscences about TidBITS. I'm a long-term subscriber back from the Compuserve Mac forum days, and I learned a lot about Macs from TidBITS when I was new to the format around the middle of the '90s.

It was nice "hearing" Carl talk about 1Password instead of merely "seeing" his many helpful comments in the Agile Web Solutions user forums. I rarely speak out like this about Mac software in general, but in the case of 1Password, I'm so passionate about it and use it so much, that I felt obligated. I recently retired from the software industry and I truly believe that not only is this one of the finest products available for the Mac, I feel the folks at AWS are a cut above many others in their professionalism and dedication to their products and more importantly, to their users. Putting users first is somewhat of an art lost to greed these days, and it's so refreshing to watch how AWS does business. I've been using 1Password almost since its inception it is the most used application on my Mac. I commend AWS for developoing it and for remaining true to their users over the past few years.

Hello Chuck,

Just to let you kn ow that when I tried to enter the MacVoices website from iTunes I get a malware warning from Safari 3. This also happened when I tried simply typing the address into the address bar, it did not happen when I tried entering through the archive.
Anyway, the reason I was poking around your site was so that I could thank you for bringing up the topic of accessibility on the Mac. I know that as the 'baby boomers' age this is going to be be a growing issue and as you will see from the note I sent to Shelly, which I will paste below, this is one of the Mac's strong points.
 Thanks,

John
Hi Shelley,
As one who often listens to Mac voices and is also visually handicapped I was pleased to hear the issue of accessibility being discussed. As one who uses Mac's exclusively I know that Apple has gone to a good deal of effort to improve the accessibility features of it's operating system in recent years. I do not use an iPhone, but I spend a good deal of time on the Mac. In the last year or so be addition of the 'Alex' voice and making iTunes accessible to voiceover were big steps forward.
I am also somewhat familiar with the community of the blind having worked on the state consumer advisory board for vocational rehabilitation and having attended a summer session at the local school for the blind.
It seems to me that we in the Mac community are not doing a particularly good job of discussing the Macintosh's accessibility features or promoting them. I would like to see this change. I think Apple has done an incredible job of making improvements in this area and in providing them , not only free, but with very little self-promotion. I suppose that Apple has a dedicated team working with the visually handicapped to have gotten things so right. I have recently, for the first time, experimented with Windows XP and Jaws. I cannot believe how poorly they preform. It was like going back to system 7, and I am shocked by the amount of money that individuals and institutions have shelled out over the years for Jaws. If they only knew! On the other hand I do not know how well some of the other features such as braille work . Perhaps you do? In any case for those with limited vision I would think that encourage them to use the Mac would be doing them a big favor. Would you agree.
I use a Mac Mini with two monitors and I am writing this using Dictate 9 and Alex is my guide. As my vision worsens I regard the Mac as a life preserver and want to encourage them to continue development. Do you think the time is right to write into places where the visually handicapped tend to go and encourage switching? I know how isolated and conservative the blind community tends to be. Lack of access to information and often not able to afford wasting large amounts of money coupled with the time it takes to learn new ways of doing things tends to discourage experimentation.
In any case I think what you are doing is important and I intend to check out the sites you mentioned in the interview with Chuck.

Sincerely,

John Goray

SmileonMyMac is a good company. Their products are very good and they even gave us a free license to PDFPro, so that our little league here in Tampa, could use the software to create pdf forms that we could populate via data from our back end mysql tables. Saved our little league from paying for software that we really only need to use once or twice in the two or three years, since they gave us a license.

Keep up the good work and the community support. We should support such companies and recognize their good works.

I've since purchase textExpander for myself and find that very useful as well.

Sincerely
Mohan Paul

I am intrigued with BusyCal. I have to say that BusySync has been flawless here in our home office with 3 Macs, and 2 iPhones.

I don't see a place to post problems here, so please forgive me if this should go somewhere else.

Is there a way to make Adobe Garamond Expert work with Mac 10.5?
When I ask the aces on my campus, they just tell me it's a "known issue."

Thanks for any help.

Why do I get so the impression that I'm listening to inside baseball here? I'm not very familiar with the Anglo-Saxon judicial system, but I get the impression that jury duty isn't considered to be something people like to do. So the title of the show is perhaps a bit of a disadvantage.

Just some friendly advice of a loyal MacVoices listener. I hope you can use it to your advantage.

I'm sorry, I can't let the blanket recommendation of Apple wireless products go without pointing out these comments on Apple's site:
http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=83C90BF3&nplm=MA073LL/A

Every manufacturer has people who find their products easy to set up and configure, and others who can't tell top from bottom. I've personally had Apple's setup wizards completely hose an Airport network (like when the Express first came out and I told the wizard to setup a WDS; took me 20 minutes to restore my network after it completely screwed up the settings in the Extreme base station and hosed the Express so bad I had to do a hard reset).

For those of us who have a clue, Linksys is a fine alternative, especially for those people who are switchers. And I've had networking products from two other companies that had Java based firmware upgrades that didn't require a Windows machine: Dayna and Intel. Copy the file to a directory on the router, reboot the router, and the boot process uncompressed an installed the firmware upgrade.

Sticking with all Apple may be good advice for the non-computer literate or first-timer, but then no matter how good the setup software is, those people are likely to get into trouble. Does grandma know what DHCP or DNS is?

I love MacVoices, I respect Bob LeVitus and his consulting firm but I just had to leave a comment on this podcast. Of course I am probably not the target audience so take my comments in the context of a Solaris and Network admin.

Respectfully,
Dave Stempnakowski

I recently purchased Toast Titanium 8 for the specific purpose of duplicating slideshows from the original DVDs made on my G5, using iPhoto and iDVD. I have tried, in vain, to duplicate these slideshows with Toast 8. All of the reviews I've read, and I researched this carefully, raved about the ease of copying personal DVDs. Now I'm stuck with a piece of software that doesn't seem to produce, as advertised. Calls to product support have not been successful. They claim that my original DVDs are are at fault. If so, why do they play on my TV with no difficulty? I need help.

[...] My new ebook, Take Control of Your 802.11n AirPort Extreme Network, is out: The 154-page electronic book (immediate download) covers every aspect of using Apple's new 802.11n base station and client adapters, including how to set up a side-by-side legacy network (802.11b/g in 2.4 GHz) and new 802.11n (5 GHz), choosing the right band and channel, the benefits and logistics of adding shared hard drives via the base station, and connecting an Apple TV to the network. I run through all the security options now available, including Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), which Apple has integrated into both its operating system and its base station firmware. The book costs $10. Wait, did I say $10? As a Wi-Fi Networking News reader, you get 10-percent off (paying $9) by following this link or using this coupon code: CPN005070406WNN. Excerpts are available through that link, as well the full table of contents, and other details. I spoke to Chuck Joiner at MacVoices about 802.11n networking in general and Apple's flavor in particular in a podcast. [...]

Guess it depends on the degree of integration with Mail. (Not such a feeble client in my view - I use it all the time because it does what it says on the tin and (mostly) doesn't crash). However, if Mail and NH can't get it together on To Do's (Like the excellent MailTags) and do the obvious stuff with contacts, then I agree, a client needs to be included.

I have owned and used Now Contact and Up to Date since 1996. I was thrilled to hear about this long awaited newly rebuilt from the ground up version. However, I am so very disappointed that it will not include a robust email client to make this PIM a complete solution. I know its asking a lot but it isn't enough to couple this PIM with Apple's feeble Mail client. After all, what is a PIM without this all important component?

Oh man, I wish I had heard this podcast somewhat earlier. Though it's late, I've bought the ebook, just in case I ever have to go through this again.

In November I changed my web hosting service after two years at a webhost with zero support! Fine, I suppose, for experts but not for newbies at web-related stuff like me. The new host (with excellent support services) smoothly transferred all the stuff from the website at the old hosting service to themselves...but then needed me to change the DNS addresses of my domain name to point to the new addresses. And therewith began a Kafkian trip. Thought my domain name was registered with Joker but found out not true anymore. I tried to contact the so-called email support without receiving any response. Finally found a phone number and called that. Was told that yes, since middle of 2004 they had transferred Registrar to their affiliated one, BookMyName. Went to their website but it said I had no domain name registered with them. Whois said otherwise. Back and forth in ever more surreal emails where they were obviously making fun of me. Another phone call. Finally got an email giving me login and password info to manage my domain name where I succeeded in transferring DNS addresses. Then decided to transfer Registrars too to my new host while I was at it and that worked.

Then I noticed I had also registered a .eu domain name and the game started all over again. Nightmare! After some more back and forth I got wise and posted a complaint at the ICANN site. After two days I received login and password for the .eu domain name. Hope to get outta there soonest.

The Take Control of Domain Names ebook shall be my evening's reading.
