Design and desktop publishing guru Jay Nelson of Design Tools Monthly is back to talk about the new features of QuarkXPress 8. Jay discusses the design changes that make this new version “not your grandfather’s QuarkXPress” and a worthy competitor for the Adobe Creative Suite applications. Features such as support for non-English publishing, inclusion of Flash support and more are examined as Jay covers some of the challenges Quark faces in changing both the reality and perception of their product. Author and digital photographer Mikkel Aaland took a group of his friends to Iceland and the result was Photoshop Lightroom Adventure: Mastering Adobe’s Next-Generation Tool for Digital Photographers. Mikkel talks about his unusual approach to Adobe’s digital photo manipulation software and how it yielded a book that both instructs and inspires. How the team provided feedback to Adobe while in Iceland, and got new beta copies of Lightroom in return, how a carload of models became part of the project and some thoughts on his other new book, Photoshop CS3 Raw: Get the Most Out of the Raw Format with Adobe Photoshop, Camera Raw, and Bridge are all included in this informal discussion.
Mikkel will be presenting in the O’Reilly booth at Macworld Expo, and tells listeners what they’ll learn when they attend his session on Wednesday afternoon, January 16.

Sharon Zardetto has updated her Take Control book on fonts to Take Control of Fonts in Leopard because even though there are fewer font issues in Leopard, there are still many aspects of font management you need to be aware of. Sharon talks about why why you might have font issues with Microsoft Office 2004 if you migrate to Leopard and how to resolve those issues, a font question Leopard asks that you only get to answer once (and you’d better get it right), and tells us which font is named for a catapult.
